Effects of Lockdown

We have only begun to see the effects that these misguided lockdowns will have on students of all ages. This USA Today article on the effects of the school lockdowns opened my eyes to areas that I had not considered previously. The loss of learning is only scratching the surface of how damaging government actions have been this past year, especially for the most vulnerable among us. Children have learned to be afraid of germs to the point of immobility. They have learned to comply with politician’s whims and not to question their demands. They have learned to pull away from their neighbors, faith communities, and family members in order to “stay safe.” The harm that we have collectively allowed on our most vulnerable children in the name of safety is horrific. Millions of children around the country will see detrimental effects in their lives for years to come. Let’s hope that most of the population of this country resolves to never allow something like this to happen again.

If you are interested in improving things in our educational system, please come to our Monday meetings every first and third Monday of the month.

July 5th meeting

Our next Monday Meeting:
Monday, July 5th, 5:30-7:00pm
1429 Central Ave. NW, Suite 1

“School Choices, Health Choices: A Primer for Parents”

The choices parents face about their children’s education can be difficult and confusing, especially when it comes to health. For example, what’s best for your child in terms of masking and Covid vaccinations? What are your legal rights and how do you get the whole picture? This presentation focuses on frequently asked questions on this topic.

Melanie Rubin co-chairs the Executive Committee for the New Mexico Freedoms Alliance and is a co-creator of the website www.AskHealthyQuestions.com. She holds a Masters of Education in instructional systems design. Ms. Rubin believes strongly in parents’ rights to choose what’s best for their families.

A new opportunity for all kids

The Rio Grande Foundation is pleased to announce that it has created a new education reform coalition under the name of Opportunity for All Kids New Mexico (OAKNM).

The mission of this new organization is to bring New Mexico parents and students together to improve New Mexico’s schools. While this can be achieved to some extent through increased accountability, it is our strong belief that choice and allowing families, not bureaucracies, to direct educational resources, is the path to success.

To head up this effort the Foundation has hired Edwin Aybar to be their Director of Education Coalitions under OAKNM. Edwin has worked with the Libre Initiative as a grassroots organizer for educational change. Previously, he taught music and music history in several universities and was the owner of a music and dance studio.

In addition to our online presence which includes our website and social media, we are excited to announce bi-monthly Educational Freedom meetings being organized by OAKNM. Every first and third Monday of each month anybody interested in improving the educational system of New Mexico is invited to join us from 5:30-7:00pm. We are looking to educate ourselves, discuss issues and possible solutions, and prepare ourselves to take political action when an opportunity might arise. It is going to take time to build a powerful constituency for education reform.

While our organization will have a natural “conservative” leaning, we want to stress that the meetings will be politically non-partisan. We want to be a group that is focused on solutions, rather than character attacks, and we believe that respectful dialogue is the only path forward in these politically divided times.

We can work together to create a new opportunity for all kids.

First Monday Meeting

Our first Monday meeting at OAKNM went smoothly. Those of us in attendance have reached out to a couple of state legislators and we are excited to see how we can affect positive change in the education of children in New Mexico. The presentation by David Hodges of the Institute for Justice was very informational.

It gave us hope for our state. Mr. Hodges, an attorney on IJ’s Educational Choice Team, worked on the landmark Supreme Court case Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, which they won in 2020. This decision opened the way for states to implement true school choice and educational freedom for its citizens. Since this decision, 14 states have passed educational choice bills for their states, and we are hopeful New Mexico will soon follow.

We hope you will join us in one of our future meetings, every first and third Monday of the month.
